Wegmans Is In The Bar Business

by admin on March 1, 2010

In this morning’s paper I was reading a regurgitated story from the Philadelphia Inquirer about Wegmans Pub at the Collegeville, Pa store! Apparently this opened back in October, with a second slated to open in June, and a third in the works.

And I thought the upstairs restaurant by me was something else for a grocery store.

And people wonder why I say Wegman’s is a destination store, not a weekly grocery shopping store. What is next? A movie theater? Lots of money in buttered popcorn and fountain drinks.

That’s how Wegmans got around the no alcohol in grocery stores law in Pennsylvania. They built a “pub”.

Who goes to the grocery store to have a few beers after work or to watch the big game? Um, nobody.

Reading more Jay, Wegmans is not the only grocery store to apply for a pub license. Then today I was reading the state is “thinking” about allowing regular beer sales in grocery store in PA?

And I think NY is behind the times!

When my friends and I go the local “bar”, it’s the one at the movie theater. The grocery store seems a little far fetched, but to each his own. *shrugs*

The Wegmans in Mechanicsburg, PA sells beer and you can buy a bottle and sit down and drink it with your cafe purchase (or just by itself I suppose) but no bar. There was a huge controversy when they put the beer in the store and so many people said they would no longer shop there. Come on people, in most other states that’s NORMAL! PA is so backwards and behind the times.

According to the all mighty and all knowing Wikipedia only 4 states prohibit sales of beer in grocery stores. North Dakota, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, & Wyoming. New Jersey makes it difficult. They allow only 2 liquor licenses per grocery or convenience store chain.
