I used a Marcal free napkins coupon at Tops today. The napkins were $2.99 and the coupon value is $2.80. This limits to one per customer, so even paying 19¢ I knew I had to get started if I wanted to use all I had by Christmas (when the coupon expires).
Apparently Tops registers do not yet read the extended bar codes on a coupon. The free $1 coupon and the free $2.80 coupon are coded the same, and the only difference is the 18 and 19 at the end of the extended bar code. The $2.80 coupons are scanning off as $1 at the register! I did not notice it when it happened and as I was checking my CRT on the way out the door I noticed it said “Free marcal $1).
So, I pointed out the error to the front end manager and she refunded my $1.80. There is no way for Tops to correct this in their system because I doubt they are going to set the coupons to $2.80 and lose $1.80 every time the $1 free scans.
Soooo, if you use the free napkins coupon, watch the register and correct the cashier right then and there.

I’m looking at a couple Marcel MQ that expire at the end of the month. Both have the old UPC and the extended UPC.
My free MQ is limited to $1.00 max. UPC 43032 10001 I assume this will cause the register to beep and the cashier must manually enter an amount.
Now the other MQ is for $2.00 off bath tissue. UPC 43032 10082 Given rule of thumb is that an ending “76″ means a dollar off and each increase of “1″ means another $.25 off.
Now the extended UPC are almost the same, except the initial MQ ends in “2″, while the other ends in “7″ I’m just guessing that somewhere in the lines, bars and dots there is additional info.
