I have an appointment this morning with my pooch, so my deal time was severely limited. My last dog was very large, over 85#, had fur that was 6″ – 8″ long on his double coat, and dry skin. He went to the groomers every 6 weeks and it cost $35 – $45 dollars (the price did not rise that much in 13 years). The new guy is 10#, expected to be no bigger than 14# has 3″ long hair (not fur) and only has a single coat. I’ve been doing his grooming since we got him, and have been doing a “beautiful job”. That compliment was from the training center he has gone to for classes. The lady that does the classes owns a dog grooming salon.
Today, we are going to a special class to learn how to groom your dog. Because of the type of dog he is (a Coton de Tulear) most people have no idea how to groom him. He’s a rare breed, although the breed has been around for about 400 years. So, before and after we got Max I did a lot of on-line research, bought some books (and read them!) and, through trial and error, figured out the best way to make him look great, deal with knots and what products to purchase for him. From today’s class I hope to learn how better to do his head when I bathe him and how to deal with his ears.
Based on what my former grooming costs were, taking into account inflation and that Max is a much smaller dog, I based per time at $45. Max would go at least once a month (heck, I bathe him 2-3 times per month. A white dog that loves dirt ends up looking like a panda after a rain) resulting in grooming costs over over $7,000 if he lived a normal life span. If I do it, I can knock over $6,000 off that even after purchasing the clippers, shampoos, conditioners, sprays, etc.
So, the class in in 30 minutes and I only had time to make a few short runs this morning. With that in mind, I just did Rite Aid at one store.
