As you know, Didi recently competed in the Great Sugardale Bac-on. Here is her account of her experience:
So I just got back from my first ever food competition. For most of you that are regular readers to Ann’s blog, you are aware that I LOVE to entertain. I love to cook and bake, it is literally a creative outlet for me… a true passion that is “never” labor intensive!!
So, having been inspired by another blog, I entered a recipe for the Great Sugardale BAC-ON competition being held at the Ohio State fair in Columbus OH. I figured, “what the heck, what is the worst that can happen, they’ll send me a coupon”!
Fast forward a few weeks later I get a phone call from a Sugardale rep that I am one of the 30 semi-finalists along w/ an email. Our recipes were judged on creativity, orginality, ease of preparation etc. They wanted me to fill out papers once I received them (they FedEx it), have them notarized and send them back within 7 days. Once they received my papers “their chefs” would make my dish and present it to a panel of judges. The judges would then critique it based on appearance, taste etc. If I passed that part, then I moved on to become one of nine semi-finalists. Their were 3 categories. Ready Bacon, Appetizers/Entertaining and Main Dish. I was Main Dish, my recipe was “Steak & Bacon Rolls”.
I was notified 3 weeks ago that I was one of the 9 SEMI-FINALISTS!!! Yooohoooo, jump up and down, cheer, fist pump… wait, hold on… OMG!!!! ANXIETY!!! “I can’t do this” I tell myself, what was I thinking. My family (bless them all, cuz I am so not the easiest person to live with), was trying to calm me in-between my fits of hysteria over this!
Fast forward to last Thursday – Can I just preface this and tell you guys how I LOVE MY BUTCHER!! Allen, the owner of Skip’s Meat Market on W. Ridge Road (Rochester), is THE BEST!!! He cut my pre-ordered flank steak to the thinness that I needed for a “quicker cooking time”. The butcher shop was also rooting for me!!
A few weeks back when I found out I was one of the 9 semi-finalists, I promptly went to the butcher to get flank steak. They were out. Huh, you’re a butcher, how can you be out of flank steak?? Seriously??? I quickly explained to Allen’s niece why I needed Flank steak, what it was for… and very quickly I became the Skip’s celebrity! LOL
Nevertheless, I substituted skirt (not the same, but flatness is what I was looking for), and promptly came home to a calamity of errors. Everything that could of go wrong for this trial run, DID!! By the end of the night, hubby had quit trying to approach me (bless the patience of this man), the dogs were in hiding and the girls were LOCKED in their rooms w/ IPODS and pretending they were on a Greek Island somewhere!! I was a mess! Tears streaming from my eyes, basically knowing I can’t do this, and what was I thinking! Didn’t sleep all night, and kept going over the time requirements and what I could do differently. Did it again on Saturday… success! YES!!
Fast forward to last Saturday. We arrived at the Ohio State Fair, and were in the wrong gate, can’t find the Main Stage, you know the drill….
I’m freaking, family is BACKING AWAY AND HATING ME!! *insert evil grin*
We find the stage, and then is where I meet the most AMAZING, SWEET AND TALENTED people ever!! They were so friendly, and awesome. They were from various parts of the country and we were all their to do what we like best… cook!! I was next to such talent you guys, it blew me away!!
This is where my *drama queen #1 and I first arrived*

We were third on the venue. We waited and cheered and had our fingers crossed!! We were literally melting, it was so hot that day!!
Finally, my turn to prep. I go to the prep area and… their is a hot plate. I have 30 minutes to prep and it took the blessed hotplate 13 minutes to HEAT… PANIC TIME!!! It was in a domino (what the heck effect) at this point. My drama queen took my parsley on stage thinking it was garnish, it was for my stuffing, the bacon wasn’t cooking fast enough…. on and on and on.

On stage, the camera was constantly filming what I was doing, I was constantly being asked questions by the MC, and I was SWEATING because it was so hot. I NEVER SWEAT!!

This is the dish I made.

All in all, even though I didn’t place, I wouldn’t take back that experience for all the money in the world! It was an amazing experience. Just meeting such wonderful, talented ppl was payback in itself!!
Did the fact that I didn’t place deter me? No, it actually motivated me to try harder, plan for mishaps and READ, READ, READ the fine print re: cooking times etc.
This was a dream come true for me, and I was honored and amazed to even be competing!!
Thank you Sugardale, love their bacon!!

Didi,
I’m so happy for you! Congratulations on making it so far. I can’t imagine how nervous you were. By the way… are you going to share that delicious recipe?
Thank you Darla my friend!! I was a WRECK!!! I was literally shaking!! Their was 3 other semi-finalists that were rooting for me along w/ my family. When the MC was asking me questions I put on my “patient face”, all smiles and talk slow, lol!!
The recipe (I just checked) isn’t up yet, but will be posted on the Sugardale BAC-ON website. All the semi-finalists recipes fo 2011 will be up!!
Good Job, DIDI!!! VERY IMPRESSIVE DISH!!!
I am very proud of you!
Thank you T!! My gorgeos (has the fashionable friend0!!
Notice I was wearing addida flip flops, lol!!
Oh yes, I did notice that! How do you know??? LOL
Well…. let’s see
we both have a “shoe fettish”, and I had an injured toe. So the only thing I could of gone in was a “flip flop” w/ no thong because of the wrapping of my left big toe… do you really think I would of gone in flip flops if not for the injury my fashion minded friend??
Darla you took the words right out of my mouth. Recipe Please
Looks yummy Didi.
Thank you Ida, it is very, very, very good… familia and the 3 other semi’s were convinced that if I had 3 “male judges” (the othr 2 categories had all 3 males), but our category had 2 males and a female, I would of won…
What man doesn’t like steak and bacon???
There was a recount on my category, it was a tie! After recount the “breakfast bacon bowl” won.
The first judge, a Dr. of culinary arts, teaches somewhere, but can’t honestly remember where… the helicopter ride and the circus ppl were drowing out the MC if he wasn’t directly taking to me…
Anyway, after the announcement of the winner, I went down to hug my family and the other 3 semi-finalists and their families that were rooting for me. He came out of the judges table, around to where I was walking totally away from him and took my hand and shook it, and told me what a wonderful job I did…
That gave me such “encouragement”!!! Ida, it was the best feeling. Dh say’s it’s because he is a “chef” and knew how much effort I had put in the dish!
Way to Go Didi!!!! It is so hard to step out of our comfort zone. You did it. And sharing the ups and downs is such an encouragement for each of us to do the same. (Training for a half marathon…………definitely not something I would normally try to do!!! Your story helps.)
And yes, are you sharing the recipe?
Yeah Patti!!! You can do it girl, I have total faith in you… I’m your cheerleader, and I’M LOUD!!!!
Woooohooooooooooooooooo
We alrerady knew you are gorgeous within; now everyone knows you’re gorgeous on the outside too! (Lucky me, I already knew that!) You are our shining star! Awesome! Keep it up! You won in our books!
Awwwwwww, Jane *blushing*!! Your the best baby girl, I luves you!!!
Though I only know Didi from her unfailingly fabulous comments on the weekly Tops write-up, I have been silently rooting for her since I learned of her semi-finalist status. Who knew we would have a such a celebrity in our midsts?! Here’s hoping she used the .55/1 Sugardale Ready Bacon, Any 2.1 Oz. home mailer coup. Congrats and hope you win next year!!!
Thank you Louise!! I type (try to at least, def. need new a laptop for sure, KEY’S ARE STICKING I’M NOT LOVING THIS), as how I am in person…
Those of you who know me in person can and DO attest to this, lol!!

Imagine winning a big Kitchen Makeover and having Ann’s hubby design your kitchen! LOL
Thank you Wendy!!! My amazing friend!!!

I just noticed, that my one sleeve is up constantly on the pics, how weird is that… you think my drama queen would of noticed?? Oh, no she wouldn’t it… that’s right, she was busy making googly eyes w/ the one camera assistant!! Smack that child!!!

Way to go GF! I was thinking of you over the weekend, hoping you would have an awesome experience. It is a learning experience for sure. When hubby competes w/ friend in BBQ’s, they do alot of “Monday morning quarterbacking” afterwards. Thanks for sharing.
Hey my sista!!!
I did indeed have a wonderful time!!!
That’s awesome about your dh. Did you know that BBQing competetions are big bucks? They compete for prizes as high as $150,000.00!!! Tell dh to “get going”!!!
Wow! How awesome Didi. Congrats. Sounds like a fun and exciting event!
Thank you Mary!
It was def. an experience of a “lifetime” for me!!
Your dish looks great!! And it looks like you had a lot of fun doing it (even if you did sweat a little)
Camiele, I did sweat, that’s for sure, (who knew
), but the exp. in itself was worth it!! Thank you!!
I saw the picture before I read the post, I almost thought the picture was of Ann. I don’t think I have seen a picture of her before.
Congrats Didi!
Thank you Rose. Ann is “camera shy”… so am I in general…
Alas, I had absolutely no choice in this matter, (usually I tell everyone, *no*). But, I figured WTH?? This is exactly what happened…
Holy Cow, DiDi! That’s amazing! How cool that you did so well in a national contest!! Nevermind that you didn’t win the grand prize, you still did something amazing!

Thank you Bethany, my amazing friend!!! I can’t wait to see you at our next gathering!!!!
Didi, I feel like I know you a bit from your great comments, but am so happy to ‘see’ you, too. (even tho I’m all the way down in GA) You – and this – is a great inspiration. A friend who is very down on her luck and I have talked about doing cook-offs. (She is a great cook – only character flaw is that she won’t spend the money to buy Sunday papers!!!???!!!) Anyway, you are a REAL person who has done it!!! Keep it up. BTW, your comments always brighten my day
Awwww, Diane thank you!! I alway’s try to keep it real ya know? If it’s a good deal I post, if I screw up I post.. if I have a ?? I post… heck, you just cant “shut me up”!!

Congrats Didi and thanks for sharing your experience with us all! I love watching the cooking competition shows and always try to picture myself in their shoes. Now I know thanks to your story
It’s really nerve wracking “panic” mode that’s for sure… the stern look of concentration of finalists faces… IS FOR REAL!!
Didi, the fact that you have responded to everyone’s comments is pretty amazing! You are a very thoughtful person and a great encourager and hilarious to boot!! Great to know you, even if only through this blog.
Nice to meet you too!!
My whole thing is “if someone takes the time to talk to you”, heck, for the love of Pete, answer them… what is it going to cost you??
So I try, alway’s, to answer everyone… it’s the least can do, and thank you Patti, very, very much for the kind words…
Thoughtful, yep, that’s me… “foot in mouth for most part”, yep that’s me!!
O Didi………..I totally relate to the foot in the mouth part………….and mine is a large 9 1/2………………really hard to pull out!
LOL!!!!
Didi,
Congratulations–what an amazing accomplishment! I am proud of you; we all are.
