LL Bean Backpack Guarantee

My son is now 21 years old and a second semester college junior. When he started school, a Christian Pre-K school in a 3 year old program, I’d go the route of buying him a new backpack every year. Along about 5th grade when the book load got to be much greater, the book bags didn’t always make it through the year. When he was in 7th grade I bit the bullet and invested $70+ at LL Bean.

In his junior year of high school something happened to the zipper of the bag. I called LL Bean and they replaced it free! Turns out it is a lifetime warranty. They did not have the same one in-stock so they replaced it with a “comparable” model (actually it was a better model).

Was $70 for a book bag a crazy amount of money to spend on a 12 year old?

At the time I thought so. Looking back, it is nine years later and that book bag cost me an average of $8 per year. I’m not sure what kind of book bag you can get for $8 per year each and every year. Obviously the earlier in your child’s school career that you purchase this the better as the cost per year decreases the more years you get out of the bag. I’m not sure I’d recommend going this route for anyone under a 5th grade just because, as I recall, for those under 10 getting a new book bag every year was a wonderful shopping trip! What to choose, who to choose, what colors, etc., etc. It is a delight to shop for a book bag when looks are the driving feature!

Anyhooo that’s my 2¢ about the great LL Bean book bags. Not only does he use it for school, he dragged it through Europe last summer, if he goes camping that is what he packs and he also uses it to schlep things other than books from Point A to Point B.
