There are positives and negatives to hubby going shopping by himself. The positive is easy: I don’t have to go on one of his delightful shopping excursions. And, the negative is easy: I am not along on one of his delightful shopping excursions.
Today I missed out on:
The flea market. Now this particular place is freaking scary. I swore the one and only time I went there that I was gonna get jumped or something. Hubby of course, found it to be a wonderful place to find deals! When my brother suggested going this weekend hubby was all for it.
By staying home I missed out on some great stuff too … like expired coconut macaroons and er, you know, stuff.
And the phone call I got telling me he found bath towels? Not at all funny.
After that, hubby went to Ultimate Electronics to see what “deals” the liquidation sale was offering.
Gosh darn-it! I missed out on shopping at an electronics store. *she said as her eyes glazed over*
And the pièce de résistance? Well that was a trip to Restaurant Depot.
Now you’d think after all these years of living with hubby I would be a little smarter. When hubby calls and asks, “Do we need onions?” instead of responding “yes” I should have questioned back, “What is the deal?”
Turns out this was the deal:

He brought home a 50# bag of onions! It was $10.99, so 22¢# which is a great price, but it was still a fifty pound bag of onions!
(Scuzzy doggie is in the pic to show size context.)
Next time, I ask what the deal is before responding with a blanket-affirmative.

Omg I am dying!!! That is HILARIOUS!!!!!!!!!!
Should I be happy when I read this to.my hubby that he new it be a fifty pound bag or scared???
That’s a great story! Looks like you’ll be looking on the internet for creative ways to use your 50# of onions. I saw a recipe for an onion pie once…just sayin;.
Just chop up those onions and put about what you would use in a recipe in sandwich bags. I recommend then placing the bags in a gallon-size mayonnaise jar or something similar, to keep the odors at bay. Freeze and use in cooking. I have done this for years. They last quite a long time and are perfect when putting together casseroles or sphaghetti sauce. I also brown them with hamburger for tacos, enchiladas and even hamburger helper. You will find tons of uses for them and will enjoy the convenience of having your onions already prepared.
ok, as I was dying laughing and started reading the replies, I came across yours ~ practical and I like it…………..as I absolutely hate chopping onions, but love the flavor. So I am going to buy a small amount of onions and give this a try. 50 lbs……….uh I’ll hold out awhile on that one………lol.. Good luck Ann! Keep us posted on how it goes.
BTW, I forgot to mention that I use my food processor to chop the onions so it goes faster. I also place a wet cloth over the chopped onions until I bag them. This helps keep the tears away.
Oh, oh, I can help with a recipe. The recipe book called it Louisiana Smothered Chicken and it is onion heavy and delicious, in my book. (I knew I had it typed in already.) I wonder how long it would take my family to eat that many onions, a very long time, I know. We are working on the 3 pound bag I bought at Aldi’s almost a month ago still.
Louisiana Smothered Chicken over Rice
Description: Onion with a little chicken over Rice
Attribution: Great Taste – Low Fat cookbook
Difficulty: Easy
Yield: 4 Servings
Prep Time: 20 Minutes
Cooking Time: 40 – 50 Minutes
Ingredients:
2 tablespoon Flour
28 ounces Chicken Breast
2 tsp Olive Oil
3 large Onion
½ tsp Sugar
14.5 ounces Diced Canned Tomatoes
1 cup Chicken Broth
1 leaf Bay Leaf
½ tsp Thyme
¼ tsp Oregano
⅛ tsp Cayenne
Directions:
Put on the rice that you want to serve the dish over.
Dredge the chicken breast in the flour. In a large nonstick skillet, heat the oil until hot, but not smoking over medium heat. Add the chicken and cook until golden brown, about 2 minutes per side. With a slotted spoon, transfer the chicken to a plate.
Reduce the heat to medium/low. Add the onions to the skillet and sprinkle the sugar over. Cook, stirring frequently, until the onions are softened and translucent, about 10 to 15 minutes. Stir in the tomatoes, broth, bay leaf, thyme, oregano and cayenne. Bring to a boil, return the chicken to the pan and reduce to a simmer. Cover and cook, stirring occasionally, until the chicken is cooked through, about 15 minutes. Discard the bay leaf.
Serve over the rice.

Yum, I love sauteed onions. Just think that is only 1 1/2 lbs a day for a month. Thats not bad
I am also haunted by this post as hubby went to his favorite “health food” store this afternoon by himself. I can usually stay on top of it by buying whatever the latest thing is at a great price at Wag’s, Kroger’s or now RA, but sometimes I miss. This week I missed and he is out looking for something I have never heard of and all I can see are big $$$ signs. O my. I am sure whatever it is will make him superman and to him worth every stinkin’ dime. The things we do for love………
Look at the baby, he’s like, “please”, lol!!!
Dh is hysterical, your relaying is def.funnier than all get out. However, he is a man on a mission, providing for his family… you can’t fault him, nope, not at all!!!!
I am so glad that my DH isn’t the only one that helps like this…lol You should surprise him with an onion dinner! Onion ring appetizer’s with onion pickle relish. French Onion Soup and a baked onion (Butter and beef boullion cube then wrap in foil, delish!) Caramelized onion tart for dessert. Maybe he will rethink the bargains next time after a wonderful meal made from them!
Oooooooooooooooooooo!!!! Max is so cute!!!! I missed seeing his picture. (Ann, read between the lines please post Max’s picture more often please).
Hey, just checked at Wegmans and they are $4.99 for 10 lbs. He saved $14.05!
I used to buy the 50IBs onion bag from the farmer’s market…But even though it was at higher price..so he made best deal ever !!
It’s French onion soup time!
Haha! Im not laughing at all..
Im jealous! I wish I had that 50# bag of onions
I usually buy 20# at a time at Costco and pay about $10 cuz they have the most gorgeous & healthy onions.
I just wouldnt keep them in that bag.. and keep them in a place that air can get all around them and they should keep forever.(almost)
I agree with Kari.. Yummy French Onion Soup. Its the easiest thing in the world and the tastiest too!
I do the same thing as Norma.. chop some up in the food processor (dont od it) and freeze them.
You could also slice and pre-saute them with butter.. alone or with mushrooms and then freeze in individual serving size baggies or containers for an excellent quick topping for steaks, liver, chicken fried steak, chicken or anything else you like/need caramelized onions and/or mushrooms for…
You could try onion salad too You just chop onions up and add to miracle whip or mayo.. salt & pepper. Let it sit for a day and whalah… you have onion salad. I thought I was gonna upchuck the first time a gal said her parents were bringing it to our house for a dinner.. but it wasnt bad at all, surprisingly.
Have fun with those onions & arent you glad you missed those macaroons!
