Frugal Tips from Coupons, Deals and More Readers!

by admin on June 11, 2010

On May 31st I ran a Holiday Contest where a second entry could be earned for sharing a frugal, deal hunting, couponing, or rebating tip! Some were common sense, some were “wow, I never thought of that!”, some I disagreed with, and some were, er, umm dicey.

So, what I thought I’d do over the next month is take five of those responses daily and give you my take on the advice. I’d love for people to add their thoughts and ideas too. And if this seems familiar, yup I did this last year too! I LOVE my reader’s tips and ideas. No matter how long you play this “game” you can always learn something new. Thank you all for providing your wisdom and insight!

Hard to pick just one tip! I would say stockpile, stockpile, stockpile. Sure, it probably looks strange that I buy 20 jars of peanut butter, or laundry detergent, etc. However, chances are I paid little to nothing on them. I could NEVER pay full price for things like that again!!!

Well we all know I love a good stockpile!

My tip is to ask your local gas station if at the end of the night at Sunday, or early Monday morning, if you can come in for the coupon inserts. {my area at least} still gets credit for the paper if they still have the front page, so they don’t mind if you take the inserts. I get all my coupons this way, and I save at least $10 not buying the paper each week!

Excellent advice Janel!

My tip is to find out from your butcher when they clearance meat. A&P in my area marks down all their meet on Sunday afternoon. I don’t eat red meat, but my bf does and we’ve saved a ton of money this way. I’ve gotten whole organic chickens and roasts for 50% off and corned beef (after st. patrick’s day) for less than $0.75! for a 6 pound piece of meat. We eat much nicer cuts of meat this way and for a fraction of the price.

Also keep an eye out for half off bakery goods. We snagged a whole fresh cheesecake with fresh fruit several weeks back for $7.50. It was more than I’d typically pay since it’s an item we don’t need, but it was well worth every penny. Now each time we shop the bf heads to the bakery first, “just in case”

Thanks for the tip Kari!

Try to keep soon-to-expire coupons at the beginning of the category so they don’t get lost in the shuffle.

Wow, you must be super organized Susan! Wonderful tip.

My thriftiest tip: Always make sure to walk the perimeter of the store, especially Target. For some reason they like to “hide” the clearance deals.

Our Target hides it under these signs called 15% off. No one even looks at those. Now as soon as the signs change to 30% off it is as if locus descended. If you are really lucky, you may see a 50% off item once every other month. When I see 75% off I feel like I should buy it just because I spotted an ever illusive 75% off item at my local Target.

Oh for the good old days when I could fill carts with 90% off clearance at Target. *sigh*
