As you may or may or may not know, Coupons, Deals and More is a “for profit” blog. That means I (theoretically) make money on the blog to cover expenses, and a salary for the time I spend posting. Some of the cash is made through passive income – I make money for each unique reader that comes to the blog, you do not have to do a thing except stop by daily! Unfortunately, I am losing one of those passive income folks tomorrow – Juice Box Jungle.
I also make money through click-throughs … see the google ads in a post? If you click it once, I get a few pennies for it. And those pennies add up! As long as no one or two folks click a lot (I’d get banned if they did – google wants a click from many people not a lot of clicks from one person or ip), I make a few dollars a day from those. I used to make a decent amount of money though google, but then I decided to block a few of their spammier advertiser as well as political ads. Because of these blocks, that income went down … a lot.
I also have lijit which is the search function on the site. When you do a search on the blog, a box pops up with the returns. If you click something on the top of the search return (not to the blog, outside the blog), I make a few pennies… same with the big ad they have on the bottom of the right of the page.
Because my passive income has been severally reduced, I have spent some time updating my purchase-through affiliates. Because I added so many all the affiliate buttons would have overwhelmed the front page, so I decided to create a dedicated affiliate page. This lists nearly all of my affiliates that pay me a commission when someone makes a purchase.
The positive to this page is the affiliates are no longer “in your face” on the front page, and they are all listed together.
The negative to this page, is they are no longer “in your face” so folks will not be aware of them.
With that in mind, I am starting a new daily feature:
This will highlight whatever I have found that day that might be worthwhile to purchase. You are under no obligation to purchase anything – EVER!
This is just a compromise I made with myself on how to possibly make a few dollars from affiliates while getting most of the affiliates off the front page. And hopefully highlighting a good deal too!
I will continue to leave the coupon printing affiliates on the front page as well as highlighting a decent coupon code or deal from an affiliate.
Remember if the affiliate deal does not interest you, skip it! But they will be appearing daily starting tomorrow.
And for those interested in how much I make via the blog: I work at least 60 hours a week on the blog. I have had exactly one day off since Christmas. This is just what you do as a deal blogger. I make minimum wage for 40 hours of that work week. And, I am one of the lucky ones! No one ever becomes a blogger to make money – or if they do they are disabused of that notion quickly. If you are very, very, VERY lucky, like I am, you can do what you love and draw some type of salary while doing so.
Would I do this for free is I was not making minimum wage? Of course! Minimum wage where I pay both sides of social security and am taxed at hubby’s tax rate is not a real reason to blog, it is just a perk. I blog because helping people to save money is what I love to do! Details on my About Me page.
Would I do this if I had to pay the server bill, blog upgrades, contests, RAOK postage etc out of my own pocket instead of with blog profits? Of course! Hubby would have a conniption but we’d work around that.
My point is that earning through the blog is very nice, and some of the earnings I must do because there are costs associated with running a blog. The salary is my perk and I thank all of you who come here to read daily for making that happen! To be perfectly clear though, none of this post is meant to be a justification for making money from the blog as no justification is needed; we all like to get paid for our work. It is, however, part of my opinion that Coupons, Deals and More should be transparent and upfront about having affiliates and making money from them.

Well said! There are expenses involved in running a blog, much less the time you put into it. A few bucks here and there, help pay those.
We support you! Ok – well, I’m not sure how much I’m helping in terms of affiliates but sometimes I click through something.
I do not envy bloggers cause I know it takes a long time to do and a lot of work. But I do love and support them because most blog about something they are passionate about. Hope you can make something more cause beside all the techie fees – stamps are not cheap.
Thanks Liz! Honestly though, just stopping by the blog once a day helps support a blog … you don’t have to do a thing except read an article maybe and that helps!
I really do appreciate everyone that stops by.
Ann
Well I stop by at least a few times daily. And you deserve any little penny you make. And I love the way you put together the RA deals, otherwise I would never be able to figure thos out! Onle one bad(sad) thing for me personally lately. I have a VERY VERY bad virus and more issues other than popups. So had my puter wiped clean and my geek told me to make some changesa(like no coupon printing). For now…….will listen*LOL*
mary
Mary ask your geek to make a virtual machine within your machine so you can still do coupon printing. Even without a virtual machine you should be ok with smart source, red plum and coupons.com, but any other d/l programs for coupons I would stay away from.
Also, he does not mean pdfs, he just means stuff you have to download an application to access.

As I’ve said soooo many times, your blog is my absolute favorite!! Your deal scenarios have helped shape me into the couponaholic I am today!! The hours and hard work that you put in, shows how passionate and sincere you are about helping others.I’m sure your readers want to see you make money and gain whatever success is possible. You and the other bloggers deserve whatever benefits you gain for the knowledge I take away everyday!!
What a wonderful explanation and great way to keep your site clean! I will be sure to check out these posts every day.
Well said, Ann. You are too nice!
Ann,
I think this is a great idea. This just flows along with your insight IMHO. I am looking forward to seeing your featured deals and plus, my favorite about your site (other than your wit) is I can always find things I need in an organized spot. Kudos to you and I can’t wait.
Amen, amen and AMEN!!! You deserve to be paid sweetheart, after all you do for us?? Heck, just helping/guiding me and my fuddle brain deserves a paycheck and a RAISE TO BOOT!!!
Ann, I can’t thank you enough for all you do for us everyday all day…
Do what you have to do, I support you each and every step of the way!!!!
Well, I check your site at least twice a day.
You have my 2 cents.
Just the other day on another web site people got all upset because someone did a post on a product that they were reimbursed for. Boy the coupons were flying over there, binders were all in a mess.
I couldn’t believe how upset people go that bloggers actually got paid.
I guess I have common sense, if I don’t wanna buy it or try it I don’t click on it.
Do what you gotta do, and keep up the great work.
Hi Rose,
I was told about that one. Yikes what a catastrophe! And I’m sure she works very long hours too. Sponsored posted are quite lucrative. When I went to the sbsummit in July the PR lady told us the going rate is $125 per sponsored post! I’m certain it is less for some bloggers and more for other bloggers though. Hearing those rates really made me think twice about not doing them.
Ann
I am glad you are here!! I agree with the others that you are my FAVORITE deal blogger, which is why I stop by daily – sometimes from multiple computers if I am at school or the folk’s house.
I enjoy your wit, the way you interact with everyone, and that your personality shines through making you REAL (unlike most other bloggers that seem fake or sterile). OH! And your TIMELY answers to emails, comments and “Contact Me” questions, plus you ALWAYS thank your readers for sending you deals.
I also like that you are (self described) transparent. Since I have learned some ways bloggers make money, I have intentionally avoided one blog. You tend to do business with those you like, so I be sure I come here first for coupons to print.
Here’s to you , Ann!!
*holds up a free SoBe (because there’s no wine in the house)* CHEERS!! *tink*
I have been thinking that I would like to learn to shop online, so this is great! I like packages delivered to my door. Sometimes it is a hassle trooping thru the store only to find that they are out of stock….waste of time, energy and gas. Thanks for all you do! Looking forward to finding some deals!
ut oh… the pressure is on. Don’t expect spectacular deals the first week. My online deal hunting skills are rusty. I used to do it all the time on B$, but clearly cut waaaaay back since last January when I started blogging.
Ann
Ann – oh yay! I check your site about 3-4 times a day if not more, unless it’s the weekend.
Speaking of IPs – DH only allows printing to PDF on the virtual computer so no IPs for me from it. the only way that hubby will let me print from these sites is that he happened to have this old 12 yr old desktop that he’s not using for anything and installed the software for the sites that Ann mentioned. He really despises sites that have that hidden “spyware” type thing. So I can’t do Swagbucks or anything search engine thing that tracks your usage. At least I haven’t figure it out – and that be done on a virtual machine?
Opps – I submitted my previous comment, but I just realized it really has nothing to do with the Affiliates Update thread. Sorry about that, Ann. Got carried away in my curiosity about VMs.
Ann,
Of course it will take time! But,my toaster only toasts on one side. My PJ bottoms are too small! My throw has little pills on it.
Hi Liz,
I do not run a virtual machine on my computer, so I do not know exactly how to install it. I do know it will contain the tracking spyware to within the virtual machine’s parameters and only while the VM is being used.
