2010 Vacation Planning … Need Your Input!

by Ann on December 28, 2009

For years now I have wanted to take a cross country road trip. Hubby and I traveled frequently until this past year when we got the pooch. Now hubby still travels but I did not travel much at all last year. We did not take a vacation last year.

When we went to the in-laws at Thanksgiving, Max went to a kennel. He’s not unfamiliar with the place, he’s stayed there overnight before and he goes two days a week to puppy day care at the same facility so the people are familiar to him. Max does have all his shots and had kennel cough up his nose, yet he still got sick after a week there, and lost weight he does not have to lose to boot! (Hmmm maybe I should spend a few weeks there?)

Sooooo I think we may finally do that cross country road trip in early summer. We told Sonny-boy if he does not find a summer job he’s coming with us, and he foiled my evil plan when he reacted positively to the idea! This may really end up being a family road trip, although I’m going to … er, he’s going to try his darnedest to get a summer job instead.

Now, I’ve been all over the east coast, basically everything east of the Mississippi River. I’ve also been all over the west coast (including Alaska and Hawaii). Where I have not been is the area in-between. The fly-over zone as it were. And in my case that is an honest definition because I have flown over the area many times.

Sonny-boy has been to all 48 continental states, he’s missing Alaska and Hawaii. I’m encouraging him to look for a summer job as a tour guide in Alaska this summer. Anyone know of any openings?

Hubby is a hit or miss kinda guy. I’m not exactly sure what states he’s never been to, but he definitely has not been to ND, SD and NE. I’ll have to quiz him on this, but I think is other missing states are in the New England area.

So I was thinking about taking this road trip on the I-90 to head west. With a little finagling, I think we could hit all the northern states I’ve never been to, or at the very least the northern states hubby has not been to.

Since we would be driving, we would have internet. Hubby and I could take turns driving (and so could Sonny-boy if he came along), and get some work done when the other person is at the wheel. There are a lot of pet friendly hotels now (more than I ever knew!) I have to look into what sites allow pets and which do not (otherwise we’ll be doing the ole drive by and woudjyalookatthat).

That is the background. Now here’s are my questions that I need a lot of input on:

Anyone here ever done anything like this? What route did you take? Are there any points to hit? Anyone frequently this blog live in any of those northern states? What are “must see” sites, especially the not so famous ones? When we travel west we’ll end up in Salt Lake for a week, then travel down to Las Vegas for 3-4 days. The ride back is completely open. Which way would you recommend? Which sites are “do not miss as they are NOT over-hyped”?

Also, what is the prettiest, most scenic ride? Two years ago hubby and I drove from Salt Lake to Boise and O-M-G that 5.5 hour drive seemed like it lasted three days. Except for the occasional coyote carcass there was little to see. Conversely, the very next week we drove across NYS through the Adirondacks, across Vermont and into New Hampshire and that 11 hour drive seemed like, well, 5.5 hours. It is some beautiful scenery and it made the drive go very fast. Are-we-there-yet ended up being Wow-we-are-there-already!

So, I have a month or two to plan this but I’m sure hotels will fill up fast. I know the Marriott has dog walkers available and do not prohibit leaving your pet if you go out for a few hours. Any other tips for pet travel (specifically a small dog)?

Any help or input if greatly appreciated. If you feel more comfortable doing so, please email me with your suggestions, tips and ideas.

Grand Canyon and Yellowstone! Two places I have always wanted to go-but never could. So if you go there., I could live vicariously through you LOL.

P.S. Are you gping to rent one of those spiffy travel trailers! I bet that would be awesome!

PPS: If you go by Mt Rushmore-do it at night. Awesomely pretty when lit up at night but fairly boring otherwise. (So says my hubby) Will post w/ more ideas as we think of them.

You and the family should think of coming south to augusta-missouri and check out a MO version of Germany ‘Rhineland’ wine country. I believe the big events (crowds) are at the beginning of May and during October.

So says Hubby: If you go to Calif: Mammoth Park and the Grand Cooley Dam at Lake Meade. (I ask: Is that like Hoover Dam? He says maybe it is the Hoover dam. DUH)

Hi Barbee,

Like Lucy in The Long, Long Trailer !?

Mt Rushmore is a definite look-see. Sonny-boy did it during the day years ago. He was not that enthused, but he was little sooooo

California is not on the list for this vacation as I’ve been there and hubby is there a LOT.

I took a short road trip from KCMO to Las Vegas and back about 10 years ago. I would HIGHLY recommend hitting Utah. Breathtaking views of vast-ness. Highway cut through high walls of layered rock, then opening up to vast, flat desert. Beautiful! I want to say we were on I-70. Maybe I-80. Not sure which.

On the flip side, a MUST MISS is Kansas. Not only is it basically flat, but the speed limit seems incredibly slow, and you will. get. pulled. over. for speeding. Even just a little.

Nebraska, incredibly, is flatter, but with even less to look at while driving through. This I promise: from Omaha to Scotts Bluff will be the most boring eight hours of your life! There aren’t even trees to keep you company! If you find yourself needing to drive through either state, be sure to do it at night.

Hi Rachel,

Yeah we’ll hit Utah. We’ll be there for a week (again). Hubby’s company is based in SLC so he goes every few weeks and I go a few times a year.

Oh no! That Nebraska and Kansas are so boring is disappointing. They are two states that I’ve never been to and I know hubby has yet to visit Nebraska. The drive you are describing sounds even worse then our SLC – Boise drive two years ago.

Oops! I guess SLC IS in Utah. *head bang* Well, duh!

Denver area is BEAUTIFUL, but the drive across I-70 through KS is worth doing only at night! The west side of Nebraska has a little to do there…a couple national monuments and forrests. The east has some nightlife. To be fair, I have not done sight-seeing in either state, just ‘passing through.’

Since I live in MO, I would love for you to visit our fair state! There are several wineries here! I can’t believe I failed to mention! Thanks kas!!
Also, the Ozark area is quite nice, and not too tourist-y except from Memorial Day until Labor Day.

My Dad and I just took a cross country trip in September from the Oregon Coast to Niagra Falls, NY and back. I got to do all the driving. Craters of the Moon in Idaho was interesting, Yellowstone is great. I would have like to have gone to Grand Teton and Glacier and to have spent some time in the Amish country of Illinois – maybe the next trip.

Hi Rachel,

Hubby keeps telling me that if I think the SLC area mountains are beautiful (and I do), we need to hit Colorado because those are truly gorgeous.

Hi Sarah,

While not going as far as Oregon, and not hitting the falls either, I’d love to hear more about what you did. Sounds like you went 90 all the way? Yellowstone is one the list, so is Glacier (I have a lot of pictures of Sonny-boy throwing snowballs in July… while in shorts!), and so is Grand Teton.

Dear Ann, I Love That Movie! But no, I wasn’t thinking about a silver bullet…I’m thinking a fully decked out Winnebego type w/ all the modern conveniences! (I see them on the road and dream of vacationing in one.) You can take the dog, no worries about hotel reservations and stop ‘whenever, whereever’ in a way that makes the whole vacation ‘schedule’ more flexable. (My Step-Mom and her ‘friend’ have taken many trips in these rentals…w/ the dogs.)

A dream for me-surely. But an option that you may not have considered. On the up-side…like a home on the road. On the down-side…no roomservice. LOL

Hi Barbee,

We actually did talk about it. They negative is I do not think I could drive one. Seriously. That would mean hubby would have to drive the entire time and that would not be fair to him.

Hmmm…I agree that’s an important consideration. Could you drive on only the straightways, the lonely boring parts?

My Hubby LOVES to drive and would be perfectly happy doing (almost) all of it. On the flip-side, I HATE driving and it works out very well for us. But that’s us-not you guys. It was just a thought. Enjoy your trip the way YOU want to!

With the internet and all the modern resources-I’m sure you will have it planned out perfectly and enjoy each and every moment.

hmmmm so you are saying your hubby would be amenable to chauffeuring, Barbee?

We’ve had really great experiences with the Sheraton (we have a shih tzu). They are super pet friendly, don’t charge a pet fee, and even have a pet welcome package with bones, bags, gloves and a “my best friend is traveling with me “warning” door tag for the maids.

Wooo… let’s see… DH went on a cross country road trip summer before I met him and I have heard the stories many many times over. Will pass along specific from him. =)

Hi Kari,

Did they offer access to a dog walker? Thanks for another option! We have a Sheraton credit card with a lot of points, so free nights!

Before I leave this earth I plan to see every state. So far I hope to live a long time since I have many more to see. I’m suggesting that on your way to see Mount Rushmore that you hit Michigan. To see the beautiful shoreline on the west side of the state and then you can take a car ferry in Ludington Michigan to Wisconsin just south of Green Bay. Lake Michigan is the approx size of Denmark with white sand dunes and sandy bottoms some tourists in Michigan travel the shoreline looking for all the lighthouses. Michigan is also known for Mackinac Island where no cars are allowed. The only transportation is by horse or bicycle ( all can be rented). Well now you know where I love to spend my time.

Lake Michigan sounds lovely.
