Stockpile Recipe – Texas Sheet Cake

by Ann on December 6, 2009

My grandmother was making Texas Sheet cakes long before I was born. Every picnic she brought one, every summer barbecue at her house included a Texas Sheet cake for dessert. They are moist and, according to everyone on hand, completely delicious!

Me? I don’t like chocolate cake so I was never a fan. I gotta say the frosting was good… sorta sicky-sweet which always appeals to me. The frosting is always poured on a warm cake, and it always, always, always runs over the side of the pan.

Anyhooooo, this is the recipe she used that was always such a hit. This is really easy to make.

.

Texas Sheet Cake

2 cups flour
2 cups sugar
2 sticks butter
1 cup water
1/4 cup cocoa
1/2 cup sour cream
2 eggs
1 tsp baking soda
1 tsp vanilla

Mix together flour and sugar
Melt butter in pot on stove, add water, cocoa and sour cream
Pour melted mixture into flour and sugar and stir well
Add eggs, baling soda and vanilla
Mix well
Pour into a buttered 15″ x 10″ jelly roll pan
Bake at 400º for 20 minutes

Frosting

1/4 cup cocoa
1/2 cup milk
1 stick butter

Melt butter in pot on stove, add milk and cocoa. Bring to low boil until bubbles form.

Add to this:

1# – 1 1/2# confectionery sugar sifted
1 tsp vanilla

Stir well until smooth.

Pour on top of warm from oven cake. This WILL run over the sides of the pan, so be prepared. Serve while still slightly warm.

Note: You can add chopped walnuts or pecans to the top if you like.

Thanks for this recipe – a favorite from my childhood! I can’t believe I forgot about it, although it’s easily been 15 years since I’ve had it. Can’t wait to make it!

I grew up on Texas Sheet Cake as well. However, my recipe has Crisco shortening and cinnamon and no sour cream. Though on almost every cake I make, I like to add a little sour cream for moisture. Your recipe looks awesome and I think I will try it next. Thanks for posting it.
