Why Shop On Sunday?

by admin on October 4, 2010

I have been asked in the past why I shop on Sunday. Since I was asked again last week, I thought I should explain why I, and why you, should shop on Sunday morning.

First, all my ads begin on Sunday. From Tops to Wegmans to Dash’s and all the drug store, all my store sales run Sunday – Saturday. For those of you with Wednesday – Tuesday grocery store ads, and those of you in California with Friday starts for Rite Aid, the better topic title might be “Why shop the first day of a store sale?”

There will be stock in the store. This is the main reason I run out on Sunday mornings. Stock on the store shelf prevents my having to run back later in the week when the trucks arrive. While I can get rainchecks, most expire in 30 days. Yes CVS rainchecks do not expire but my manufacturer coupons that match-up to the sales do. Time is of the essence when shopping the sales.

Shop early for best selection. This circles back to “there will be stock” but it is more specific. While there may be plenty of blue nail polish on the shelf and therefore stock on hand, there may not be the red nail polish I wanted.

If I shop early enough, I am not fighting the crowds. Because I do not work outside the house and my schedule is fluid, I could theoretically shop anytime day or night. But, the stores get crowded around here after noon most days of the week and on Saturday and Sunday it can resemble a stampede.

I need newspapers. If I am purchasing newspapers for inserts, that happens on Sunday on this area. I have to be out anyway to get those, may as well shop while I’m at the store.

I like to report back. I post a Sunday Morning Shopping thread every Sunday. If you look at the url, yesterday was post 71 so this weekly feature has been around for a while now. I am hopeful that it helps everyone to have a smoother shopping experience when they hit the stores, not only with information from my shopping trip but from generous reader input! Thanks to all who contribute to that post every week :-)

Now I do realize that reporting back is not a reason for most folks to shop early the first day of the sale, but it is a very important reason to me. I’ve noticed that there is a dearth of Sunday shopping experiences on the blogs, but I feel it is imperative that I keep up with what is happening in the field (so to speak). And, I like being unique. REALLY unique.

The only real personal negative to shopping on Sunday mornings is if I do not not get early inserts on Saturday, I may not be as prepared as I’d like to be with currently weekly coupons in-hand. Ok, ok, I’m not all that prepared regardless of whether or not I buy weekly inserts, but it sounds like a negative for other, more organized folks.

And that (and the dog) is why I get up early every Sunday morning to shop the sales. How about you? Do you shop Sunday morning? If you go later in the week, are you still able to work the deals, or are you getting a lot of rain checks?

I have a question, and I bet you have answered it before, but apparently I missed it…
I have read numerous mentions of this “dog” walking you up and/or keeping you up? What is wrong with the poor baby? Small bladder? Nightmares? Not enough play time? Just being a little “ornery”?
Fortunately, my little black furry friend is a great sleeper and must have a bladder the size of a watermelon! However his spot of choice is right between me and the hubby :)
I’m just curious….

He’s still a puppy. He goes to sleep around 9pm, we send him out again before we go to bed around 11 and then he gets up between 6:30 – 7:30 the next morning. He’s a 12# Coton de Tuléar.

Well he’ll be two soon, so puppy-hood only has about six months left.

I did post a pic but I can’t find where, so once the little grub (white dog + rain = grey dog) is groomed this week, I’ll take a new pic and post it.

I think you hit all the reasons why I would shop on Sunday. Great post! I think the only reason I would wake up on Sunday is that there are some good deals and if I don’t go first thing, I won’t be able to get it. Rainchecks don’t work well for me. All our supermarket ads start on Friday for us so it’s different from the rest of the stores.

I shop Monday nights for the 4 stores I usually shop (CVS, Walgreens, Publix and Winn Dixie). I don’t shop on Sundays because I go to church at 10:00, and even if I could get up early enough (trust me, I’m barely making it at 10:00! lol), I just wouldn’t feel right about putting shopping before church. I know not everyone feels this way, but I have to do what is right for me. I will go on Sunday evenings sometimes if I have a coupon that is going to expire or I really need something, but usually I wait until Monday. I still find most of what I need, even though the grocery stores are at the end of their cycles (if it’s something REALLY great, I’ll run in earlier). Anyway, there’s not usually more than 1 or 2 other people in CVS and Walgreens at 8:00 pm Monday, so I never have a line behind me so there’s no problem if I have to do more than one transaction, and the grocery stores are pretty empty, too. So it’s not bad, really :)

Wow, the CVS, Walgreens & Rite Aid are packed at 8 pm on Mondays in San Diego. Really, the only time that the drugstores/grocery stores are not packed are EARLY in the mornings.

Well, Pensacola’s not really a happening town… lol. Also, there are at least 3 or 4 CVS’s and Walgreens, and most people here shop WalMart anyway — there’s 5 SuperCenters in Pensacola! Rediculous! The stores are probably empty in the mornings, too, but then again, I wouldn’t know ;)

I go on Sunday’s cuz I’m up at 5:30… that’s sleeping in for me… LOL I’m usually up between 3:30 & 4:00 AM!! ;)

Meanwhile, all you posted is “reason enough”, and hell I’m still in the learning phases here!!!!! :)

I appreciate your Sunday shopping. I get to RA when the doors open, 8am. Then I go elsewhere. CVS for me, starts the Sunday sales at 6pm Saturday evening, so I go then if its something I really want and a good deal. I’m sure to get it then or go later in the week for a raincheck.

I rarely go on Sunday… I often go on Mondays & Tuesdays… sometimes Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays… HA!! I even go on Saturdays occasionally. And funny enough, they almost ALWAYS have everything Im after except at Walgreens. I quit shopping there for quite a few months cuz I couldnt get what I was after but this last week when the deals were great, I stopped in every day at several stores & was able to get the goods every day.. Maybe they’ve turned over a new leaf.
I try to not wait till the last day of a sale but generally Im doing the grocery store deals on the last day if I do any.

You should visit withe MGR at Walgreens to let him know your frustrations with the shelf swipers. I encountered this problem and they started holding some product back. It’s better since i spoke with him. Good luck!

I like reading your Sunday Shopping posts, Ann, to get tips for MY shopping. I can’t get out on Sunday mornings because of church. And with little kids, I fit shopping in whenever I can and hope that what I want is in stock (sometimes yes and sometimes no). Thanks for your helpful hints!

I also have church on Sunday morning, however, first thing Sunday morning is still the best time cause DH and the tot are still sleeping. So DH is much more willing to “watch” DD. But if I oversleep than I have to skip the drugstores. This past week was the first time I actually made it to the stores in several weeks. Thankfully we have 2 services in the morning, so if DH oversleeps, we go to 2nd service at 11:15, instead of the 9 am one.

Thank goodness the supermarkets don’t have super awesome deals so rainchecks and going later in the week, things will be stocked.

Now that school is back in I have gotten back in to a nice routine, Sunday mornings my daughter has to be to Sunday school at 9:00 so I go to the drug store which are right around the corner, pick up my papers and what ever hot deal then I go back home and pick up the other kids and go to church for 11:00. Usually that is it for Sunday.
I do also run here and there durning the week. My 2nd oldest has her class on Wed nights for 1 1/2 hrs so I am can do what ever deals I didn’t do on Sunday, it has been working out good.

I go all different days of the week. It depends on the deal.
I’m not too concerned with items being out of stock, unless it’s something that I actually need and will use right away. Then I try to squeeze in a Sunday trip. But it’s usually only the drug stores that have empty shelves…
For the most part on Sundays I feel that by the time I clip and organize, check out the inserts, and figure out my deals, I’ve spent enough time with my coupons and need to spend some time with my family.
I did go grocery shopping this Sunday, because Giant had $1 doubler coupons in the flyer and some great sales, so I knew it would be busy. I went at 6pm and found most items sold out. :( I don’t usually bother with rainchecks unless it’s something that I need ASAP. Otherwise I wait for the deal to come back around again.

What do you mean shop on Sunday? How about Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, and Saturday. I don’t like doing multiple orders at the same time. So since I have a job that takes me to different places throughout the week, it is easy to just stop in at different stores throughout the week.

How do you purchase the Sunday paper coupon inserts on Saturday?

I work full-time so Sunday is my day to relax and get ready for the week. In my area (Arlington and Ft. Worth, TX) – by the time I get to the places on Tuesday, most sale items are wiped clean so I have to wait until the nxt truck arrives later in the week. I actually LOVE Rain Checks from CVS as they will honor the CVSEB that goes along with the special.
