So You Want To Be Deal Blogger?

learn to blog

Not a week goes by where I don’t receive a few email asking for help with beginning a blog. Most of the folks have been reading Coupons, Deals and More, learned how to coupon, and now want to blog themselves.

This either means they think I am doing a crappy job and they can do a lot better, or they feel that the field is not super saturated and there is room for their voice.

I am going to go with the latter as it makes me feel better.

If you want to deal blog (or coupon blog if you prefer) to make money, forget it. Do not under any circumstance start any type of blog if you are not doing so to share – be it share your experiences, your expertise, your stories about Aunt Thelma and Cousin Bob – whatever it is, it needs to be about giving some part of you away for free. If money is your primary motivation, don’t even start.

Why, you may ask? Simple. Most bloggers, even deal bloggers, never make a dime of profit. When I started blogging after many, many years on forums, I had an affiliate background. There is so much to learn on how to make money, that it is a good year or so before most bloggers can figure out the “how” of making a buck on a blog. I started making money less than six months in, and that is difficult for most bloggers to do. And by “making money” I mean covering all costs except my time. By year two I was making minimum wage on 40 hours a week – too bad I was working 60-70 hours a week.

If you caught that last sentence, you will notice I wrote “working 60-70 hours a week”. When you start up blogging, like any new start up company, you are the boss. And the sole employee. That means long hours for little monetary reward. If you look at “bigger bloggers” (I consider myself medium sized), they usually have large staffs and seldom write up the deals themselves. They choose a corporate route and basically parlayed their blog name into a company. Do not compare yourself to a “bigger blogger”, and do not expect the same monetary rewards they took years to build to come to you immediately.

It takes years to do what the “bigger bloggers” do, a specific mindset, a willingness to forgo your “voice”, a good PR firm in many cases, excellent SEO and a few other things. If you expect to start blogging tomorrow and get rich next week (or next year), readjust your thinking.

Circling back to why most deal bloggers do not make money – most people do not last six months blogging. It is a lot of work and time. If you have five kids at home, work full time, home school, etc., you quickly realize that, while you would sincerely like to help others, the time spent away from your family is not worth the effort. Your family must come first. So, most blogs do not survive the first six months. And most blogs do not make money before the first year. Since A + B = C, if most blogs begin to make money at year one, and most blogs do not last six months, most blogs do not make money. Please notice the “most”. Nothing is absolute, and it is possible you may buck that trend.

This post is not meant to stop you from blogging or deal blogging – it is meant to make you realize that blogging is a ton of work, not a get-rich-scheme, and not something you quit your day job to begin. Begin blogging because you love to write and want to help folks. If that is a success, then you can transition to professional blogging and all its rewards.

Tomorrow I will give you an idea of the mechanics of beginning to blog, what you need and how you can proceed.

I absolutely agree! I have definitely thought about it and 1) I can’t do a better job than those I follow
2) I believe the net is saturated with blogs of this nature
And 3) I would never want to post deals just in case someone thought I was copying their posts.

You are the queen…I’m happy being a worker bee ;-)

A friend of mine asked me to start a blog of all the good deals each week because she doesn’t have time to look through everything herself. I didn’t even realize there was potential to earn money! I am a stay at home mom, so if there is a chance to earn even a couple extra dollars down the road by writing about what I do anyway, that would be awesome. Looking forward to tomorrow’s post! And btw, your blog is the best one I have come across. Its the first one I check and I look forward to the updates every day :)

Excellent post! I do blog but i’m an empty nester that was looking for something meaningful to do. I read loads of magazines and needed a way to organzize all of the dog earred tips and thought that if i’m intriged by the articles and found them useful then I can help someone while helping myself become more organzied by sharing via posts. I added Google Adsense and dabble with affiliates but that’s not necessarily to get rich but instead more of a “why not” while i’m out here. My niche is mostly about how to save money and/or time in everyday life and I throw up a deal inconsistantly here and there but I religiously follow Coupon Deals and More and a few others simply because I never intend to go that far with it. BTW I’m not a writer but I love sharing.

Thanks again for sharing and I too will look foward to reading your post tomorrow.

Interesting! I’ve been ecouraged to blog but I can’t see that happening at this point in my life. It’s too easy to be naive with things like this so I wouldn’t want to “jump the gun.”

I don’t think there’s much I could add in terms of deals, etc., and blogging about it would take my time away from actually doing the deals myself! I do think some of my wittiness and parenting stories could draw a unique audience and that would be interesting for me.

But if the (realistic) thought of bloggins brings with it more stress than excitement, it’s probably not time to start yet (like in my case).

cMe too – I have been encouraged the blog as well – especially since I’m unemployed and haven’t found another job yet. But I know that blogging is far from easy and would take time away from childcare as my youngest is still at an age where you use months instead of years. :) That and I am a crappy writer. I think I got a C+ in creative writing… and just all around poor at things related to writing (grammar yada yada yada) So blogging not be a good fit for me. Granted deal blogging in its truest form – does not require much in terms of writing (unless you are Ann’s blog!). I think there are just so many deal blogs out there – most of which, I think are pretty poor (maybe I expect too much). All that to say – Ann – You are the best deal blogger out there in my books :)

Opps – I had a point there but my internet cut out. Thanks Ann for providing us information and personal experience. It’s good to be realistic. I am further convinced that my choice was right. I wasn’t planning on deal blogging ever but I was considering something else.

and here I would have said there is a third… a niche deal blog for your local area. I have found a blog or two who does Pick’n Save, but the best one is in Minnesota and the coupons are slightly different here, and their sales run Sunday to Saturday, ours run Thursday to Wednesday, so sometimes there are additional coupons that have come out, or there are coupons that have expired in the slight lag of ours verses theres and sometimes the sales are slightly different. But to me a more localized blog who does your stores only, is a bit better.

Thanks for this series…I will definitely follow! I started blogging because I felt like I needed a place to document all of the work I do to spend less and travel more. I was repeating the same themes over and over and realized it would be easier to write it down once! I also feel like there’s a gap between the “coupon” bloggers and the “travel” bloggers. “Mommy Points” does a pretty good job from the travel perspective, and of course I follow your blog for couponing.

I started to start a blog last year (not a deal or coupon blog) and it lasted a few weeks.. maybe. ;) I figure I’ll get back to it eventually but I just got too busy, crazy, & exhausted to even think about it.. My hat is off to those who manage to work outside the home, raise families, & still find time to blog.
They have way more energy & stamina than I do. ;)

I’m in the midst of seriously starting a foodie blog just with frugal tips, ramblings… you know how I love to ramble, and of course recipes with pics and step by step….

I’ve read a few “how to’s”, this is in perfect timing for my finally being motivated to one. Not for money mind you… just because I love to cook and feed and share, lol!!! ;-)

Eagerly waiting for your input!! I know you’ve encouraged me in the past… I hear Ann’s voice saying… “but Didi”, lol!!!

Friends and family tell me that I should have a blog, but thankfully, I heard you say much of what you wrote here at a meet-up in Rochester, so I emphatically reply, “No thank you!” and direct them to your blog. :)

There are weeks I rarely have time to go shopping for the deals I find here, already mapped out. There is no way I would consider starting my own deal blog – especially when this one is really awesome! =)

Whenever I have friends ask me about couponing, I give them one of your cards and say “Read Ann’s site. She’s much better at it than me.” =)
