Couponing is many things to many people. Some folks use it as a way to stretch their budget or a way to make ends meet. For others, it is a way TO eat. And for some people, it is a “game”.
I have fallen into every one of those categories at some time in my life. I first got into couponing because it was a way to stretch the budget when my first husband and I were newly married. At some point, when lay-offs happened, it became a way to eat. No couponing? No dinner. At this juncture, couponing is more of a “game”. How low can that bill go!? Couponing is truly a way of life for me.
Ultimately, couponing is whatever you make of it. Only have 30 minutes to spend printing and gathering coupons? That’s a great use of half an hour. Can’t afford to eat (or do laundry or wash your hair or… yes, I’ve been there), couponing becomes a part time job to pay for life’s essentials.
Now there is one BIG caveat to all this… your local retailer.
In my area the grocery stores do not put forth great sales. Occasionally they have a “Run! It is a loss leader!” deal, but those are few and far between. So, I’ve adapted. My H&BA is all free. My cleaning supplies are free. Any free food items I can get at the local drugstores, I do. As it became more difficult to save 75% at the grocery store, I just figured out how to save 75% – 100% at the drugstores.
Now if you have great local grocer sales, your grocery store may be your main stock up destination. If this is so, I do urge you not to forgo the drugstores and all their free goodies, however.
And here is one big myth about couponing: You need double coupons to really save.
Baloney.
I could not get everything for 90% – 100% off at the drug stores if that were true. Heck Publix and Jewel have some the best loss leader and stock-up sales available. While double coupons can help, they are not the only way to have cheap grocery orders. Take this from one who does have doubles but has difficultly getting copious quantities of free goods at the local grocery stores.

Today my husband and I went through all the receipts we kept for 2010. We added them up to see what the total savings for 2010 would be. Rounding it off to $7000.00. Yes, that is correct. $7000.00 in savings with coupons. It took alot of studying weekly ads and matching up the coupons. We made several trips to the stores a week. I visted this site several times a day and a couple other sites. I scoured the internet for coupons. It was worth it. We stocked up on many things and gave $$$$$$ worth of food and misc. items to our relatives. I refuse to pay full price for anything. If it is not on sale or if we don’t have a coupon we try to wait til we have the coupon for it. It feels really good to know that I have the ability to save alot of money.
For me, couponing is the reason I get to stay home with my kids! It allows us to lower our grocery budget enough to pay all of our bills and still save money on just my husbands income. And since I started hosting a coupon swap on Mondays it has allowed me to fellowship with other women and help them save money!
That being said.. I would give ANYTHING to have a Kroger here in WNY!
Ann,
Thanks for putting this together. I feel like I just about to the point of having a handle on all of this, so it’s good to check myself and learn something new! I really appreciate all your hard work. It makes a big difference for my family.
Grocery deals are probably dependent on where you live. Here in Colorado, our best deals come from City Market (Kroger) mega events and Albertsons. I always try to go for the double coupons and catalina deals, but sometimes, even with all of that, it’s STILL a better deal buying at Rite Aid!
I’m gonna read each and every one in a second. I seriously was thinking of just throwing in the towel and saying “the heck w/ it” tonight!!
I gotta be honest, even though I admire and DO NOT CONDEMN in any way the SAHM’s and dads out there… can you just once, I mean once leave enough cpns for the ‘worker’s out there (who cannot print from work or loose thier jobs) so we can do some deals too…
This is the 17th day, 3rd week that I have been able to NOT PRINT ONCE, I MEAN ONE cpn out there because their all gone…
I don’t know, maybe I’m just feeling overwhelmed, or just tired of paying for cpns that everyone else get’s for free…
Yeah… I think I’ll get a glass of wine now!
Whatcha wanting Didi? Maybe I have one.. or two.. I’ll send it to you if I do. Email me.
Print ahead of time m’dear.. I hate to do that myself but I do occasionally if I think there is a rolling chance I’ll use something…If I miss a printable deal.. owell.. I have plenty stuff in my stockpile.. Im not doing without any deals at all.. Theres always something to be had..
i stay at home and am not able to print some of the coupons too, they are always gone so fast.
For me.. couponing is more of an adventure and game at this point in my life.. Im also able to help a lot more people in a lot more ways than I could in the past.
Manoman could I have used some of this knowledge 15-30 years ago..
I really do love living the coupon life.. It certainly makes the $$$ go a lot further and I have more to have more fun with too!
Didi, I know what you mean about not getting some coupons because you are at work. A suggestion would be to get online at home and visit the company you need the coupon for and see if they have anything available. Or, you can call the company and see if they have any coupons they can send you. I have done that and it has worked.
Thank you Pamela, KimH & Ann! I was feeling soooo frustrated last nite, as you could tell!! I just literally had to walk away from the PC!!
Dh put it nicely in prospective for me by using Sunday’s deals…
So, I’m sorry, just alittle frustrated, overworked mom “venting”, thanks again and sorry!!
Hey Ann… I just wanted to stop for a sec and say thank to you.. Yesterday and today I’ve been using your nifty 2010 & 2011 coupon insert record to go thru and get rid of hundreds upon hundreds of coupons that I had in my notebooks.. I haddent done any cleaning out since August sometime.. and Im in the middle of changing organization systems.. again.
The fact that you delete coupons as they expire has helped me immensely while doing this and I wanted you to know that I have been over here casting MANY MANY BLESSINGS (not babies!) in your direction..
