Organizing The Pantry – The Final Chapter

by admin on October 1, 2010

So after sizing up the mess and then dragging it all out, and then rearranging and labeling the end result looks like this:

cleaned up pantry
cleaned up pantry

Notice all the extra room when expired products are disposed of, and excess is sent to the basement?

Will it look like this in a month? Yes.

Will it look like this in seven months? Probably not. Hubby and I are usually good for six months before our slacker tendencies take over and the “plop on top” begins. If we would just take a moment to pull forward shorter dated products (like they do in dairy), and actually put products in their proper place, we’d never have to do the yearly shovel-out!

Here are a few tips and hints:

• Dispose of, or reuse, stale chips, crackers etc
• Anything moldy or otherwise spoiled must be tossed – do not try and reuse or eat spoiled products
• Store the minimum amount of necessary products on-hand if you have a basement or garage storage area
• Face off cans and boxes for easy reading (that means face the labels toward you)
• Rotate stock placing long dated items in back, short dated products in front
Label, Label, Label
• If you have products that require directions, and you’ve transferred the container, tape them to the outside of the new container (hubby has a tendency to put the directions inside the container on top of the dry food which is gross IMO)
• Don’t plop, put the items in their proper containers or on the correct shelves
• Short on storage!? No basement or garage? Get creative… under the bed containers (properly labeled of course), an unused bathtub in a second bathroom and the attic stairs are just a few ideas)

Now it is your turn? What tips, tricks and hints do you have for keeping your pantry clean, neat and the food in-date?

What an accomplishment. I am impressed. I too have the problem of “once it is clean I can keep it clean for a few months then it goes right back to where it was.” I have virtually no cabinet space, so thanks for the idea of putting things under the beds! This beats my tip of don’t buy so much that you can’t store ~ if you are creative enough you can store anywhere! Next time I need a can of tomato sauce, I may have to run to the bedroom instead of pulling out every can in my tiny cabinet. :D

Thank you for sharing your pantry transformation with us. I have been looking forward to the daily updates.

Great job! And great tips.
I don’t think I have another good tip to add. Eat foods faster? :) :) I love how big your pantry is!

Good job! I’m still bewildered and amazed at your basement stockpile-it seriously look like no grocery store I’ve ever been in! Lol Thanks for the idea with the old boxes, I’m trying that this weekend with Bj’s boxes(well I’m going to get them anyway).

I like Darla’s idea of a part 2, Take it on the road and organize us all. lol

I have a storage idea to share, if you have little ones you can use the empty plastic baby wipe containers, take the tops off and stand the tuna pouches in they fit perfectly.

btw Ann those tuna coupons did double at Tops, yay
I now have a years supply of free tuna lol Like two baby wipe tubs full.
