There may be snow on the ground but if you are north of the Mason-Dixon line it is now time to look into and sign up for your local CSA!
Yesterday hubby sent off our check for the CSA. The price went up $10 this year. We will get 22 – 26 weeks of produce for $300 – this averages out to $11.50 – $13.60 per week depending on how many weeks we get produce. Since we freeze quite a bit of the vegetables we receive this actually covers our vegetable needs for 9-10 months.
Last year our local CSA indicated they were getting into the fruit game! I am hoping next year may bear fruit that we can purchase.
So locate your local CSA and decide whether or not it is an economically sound proposition for you and your family. As I understand it, some areas are crazy-expensive and so not worth it, some CSAs are year round, some will deliver to your door! You need to check your local CSA farm and see what the policies, procedures and costs are.
If you are local (Genesee, Erie, Niagara, Orleans, Monroe, Ontario, Livingston, and Wyoming counties), we subscribe from Porter Farms and I would definitely recommend them. Their blog has much more information than their website.

Thanks so much Ann! I am from Buffalo and am definitely going to sign up this year! I would have never known about this program without you, really appreciate it.
Good luck Chantel.

I was offered to join for Spring/Summer Share which run 18 weeks from the week of May 2 to the week of August 29 for $695 here: dffarms.com
I think not!
*Ouch* Tatiana. I have a feeling organic produce is extremely expensive near you.

One thing for sure, I can be going to farmers markets or pick your own all season and pick and choose exactly what I want for less than than.
