As much as we all enjoy a good deal, sometimes the shopping and deal hunting can become a real chore. It is ok to take a break from shopping the deals when you are tired or fed-up with the “game”. Yes, you may miss a few deals on said break, but you will come back refreshed and with a new purpose. Heck, even cutting back on the number of stores you shop, or the number of times you shop during the week, can rejuvenate you!

Remember you have built your stockpile up for a number of reasons, and one is to be able take time off when life intrudes, and not worry about having enough in the house to eat.

Even I have weeks where I am just not into it and my shopping is bare minimum. And, being honest, if I didn’t blog about the deals (and as a deal blogger, I feel very strongly I need to be doing deals in order to report them), I probably would be taking a break at least for a few weeks during the year. I too get worn out. Hmmm maybe I just feel that way this week because getting 80 bottles of pop for a penny each to stockpile for the summer was quite a bit of work!? But, I am a true deal junkie and it only takes a great drugstore or grocery store sale to perk me right back up!

I have shopped at a number of bakery outlets in my time: Hostess, Entenmann’s and Schwebel to name a few. Last week when we were passing by the local Schwebel outlet, hubby decided he would like to stop in.

We found some snack cakes of course, discounted breads, and the best deal, raisin bread for $1.69 – regularly $4.29. Hubby is going to make bread pudding with the raisin bread and the (dry) cinnamon rolls we purchased.

When shopping a bakery outlet, somethings to look for:

• Expiration dates – The outlets really do pull forward soon-to-expire stock, so reach to the back of the rack for the longest dated items.
• Next day expirations – One and two day until expiration items are typically the best deals at a bakery outlet. If you can freeze the product or use them quickly, they can be great buys.
• Individual snack cakes vs Boxed cakes – The boxed cakes are typically less expensive, but individual packets are great for trying new items.
• Oddball Products – Bakery outlets usually sell items other than cakes and breads. Hubby purchased a low sodium bouillon that has been difficult to find locally lately, at the same price as the grocery store. This leads me to .
• Prices – Not all the prices at your local bakery outlet are great. Typically there is a loss leader or two that are fabulous deals, and everything else is an ok deal. Familiarity with local bread and snack prices can enhance your bakery outlet shopping experience.
• Entertainment Books – many times the local entertainment book has a bakery outlet coupon.

In my opinion, the biggest negative to shopping at a bakery outlet:

• Snacks! – Too many snacks in the house isn’t always a good thing!

Shopping at a bakery outlet can be a great way to stretch your dollar. Like any store you can overspend on unnecessary items if you aren’t careful. A list and firm shopping plan can go a long way toward making a bakery outlet a great weekly, bi-weekly or monthly stop.

Breakfast on the Go Muffins

Ingredients:

1# bacon cooked
3 1/2 cups all purpose flour
1/3 cup sugar
4 tsp baking powder
1 tsp salt
2 cups milk
2 large eggs
2 1/2 tbls unsalted butter melted
1 dozen (12) small to medium *uncooked* eggs

Cooking Instructions

• Cook your bacon till almost crisp but not quite, you still want it pliable. Place on paper towel lined plate and set aside.
• Preheat your oven to 400º
• In a medium size bowl, sift your dry ingredients together, including the sugar. Set aside.
• In another bowl, add your wet ingredients. Pour your wet ingredients into the dry and mix well, the batter will be slightly lumpy.
• Spray your muffin tins with non stick cooking spray.
• Fill each muffin tin with batter to measure halfway full.

• Using your bacon make a little coral inside the muffin tin, this will be your fence and guide line.
• Gently break your egg on top of the batter and INSIDE of the bacon coral. (That is why it’s important to use small to medium eggs.)

• Use the leftover batter to gently cover the egg.
• The batter will spread and puff, so just ensure the egg is covered.

• Bake for 22-25 minutes till lightly golden.
• Let cool a few minutes inside the tins, then remove onto cooling rack to cool all the way thru.
• Store in an airtight container in the fridge.

When I was a kid, my father was a teacher. He was paid bi-weekly so the big shopping trip happened for us ever other week in our family. When my mother went shopping, at least one of us children went with her. I have no idea why she wanted a child along, we all know errands are faster without children or spouses in tow, and usually cheaper too.

And for her, a child along for the shop came with a price. In our case, that was Mr. Wonderful’s Surprise – hands down the best cereal ever made!!

She would allow us two boxes during that big shopping trip on Friday evenings, and by Saturday morning my siblings and I had blown through at least one box and were bouncing off the walls!

You see, Mr. Wonderful’s Surprise was a little wafer with chocolate (or vanilla) inside. The sugar content must have been through the roof! It probably would have been more efficient to have just shoveled sugar into our faces straight from the sugar bowl and eliminated the crunching, Mr. Wonderful’s Surprise was that sweet.

Kellogg’s Krave Double Chocolate Cereal definitely falls into the same category. While not quite as sugary “only” 11 grams (3 teaspoons per serving!) and not as pudding-like in the center, the Krave is pretty close.

I opened the box and tried a few squares before it disappeared into the abyss that is hubby’s office. He’s been eating it as a snack, and enjoying it very much.
