While traveling down in Florida, hubby and I discovered the San Sebastian Winery in St Augustine. The winery came into being in 1996, but the grape they use, muscadines, have been used for making commercial fine and port wines dating back to the 1500s. The first winery in what is now the United States was in the St Augustine area.

Muscadines grapes are natural to the southeastern United States including the following states: Alabama, Arkansas, the Carolinas, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maryland, Missouri, Mississippi, Oklahoma, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia, and West Virginia. The typical muscadine wine is sweet due to vintners traditionally add sugar during the winemaking process.

The Vintner Description:

This wine is balanced to express intense fruit flavor derived from the Noble variety of the Native Muscadine grape. Vintners Red is sure to raise an eyebrow and a second glass. Served slightly chilled this wine is a great complement to any pasta dish as well as for just sitting and relaxing.

And my opinion:

As all of you that have read my past wine reviews know, I love a sweet wine! And this was certainly sweet. The San Sebastian Vintner’s Red smells like grape juice. The taste reminds me of nothing so much as Mogen David red wine, or a glass of Welch’s grape juice.

At $9.99 it is cheap, and sweet, but that is about all it really has going for it.

As you all know, hubby and I are down in Miami for the month enjoying the rain and clouds (seriously, it has been sunny one day, although it has been above 70º daily). I brought my bag of unclipped coupons down with me, and I am wondering why I bothered?

I’ve been at this couponing gig a long-time. Along the way, I’ve learned a thing or two and I’d like to share this knowledge in little snippets which is a tad different from my long, drawn out, normal 3pm posts.

• The dollar stores can be a reasonable stop while on vacation to get you through a week’s worth of goods.

• Shopping without coupons can be really costly.

• If you are going to take the time to lug 40#s worth of whole, unlcipped inserts with you while on vacation, then spend the time using them while you shop.

• Pick up the local Sunday paper when you are vacation or working in an area not by your home if only to settle your curiosity about denominations and regional coupons.

• Never buy more than you can transport home. (where’s the head banging icon?)

Hubby was perusing the aisles of DollarTree the other day when he came across this:

Temptations by Jell-O Boston Creme Pie was like no other instant pudding I ever had. It was smooth and creamy. There are eight servings in a container, which is more like six servings for those of us with a sweet tooth. Still quite a bit for the dollar he paid at DollarTree

To make it, you place the topping in a bowl of hot tap water (you know the Smucker’s headshell ice cream toppings? That is what this reminded me of), and set aside. While that is warming, you add the milk to the pudding mix, beat and pour into glasses or cups. After that, you remove the topping from the water, shake for a minute and then pour on top of the pudding. There was also enough topping to cover all the pudding very well! You refrigerate for half an hour, and then enjoy.

If you are going to DollarTree anytime in the near future, I would definitely encourage you to buy a Temptations Jell-O Boston Creme Pie and give it a try. We went back and bought five more and will take them home with us!

One of my dirty little secrets is I’ve become brand loyal to Brown Cow yogurt. Oh, I do cheat on them occasionally, but for the most part I purchase Brown Cow, even without a coupon, even when not on sale.

The good part is when it is on sale, I can stock-up. Sure there is an expiration date, but with yogurt I think of it more as a guideline than a rule.

The sale price in my area is 89¢. I did find it at Whole Foods back in November for 3/$2 and stocked-up and hauled a supply home with me from Chicago.

This will be the last post in this series unless something new develops. I think I have sufficiently covered the realities of couponing, and am listing the highlights below. You can read the full series here.

In my opinion, the Extreme Couponing show was the worst thing to happen to couponing since Bud Miller and his Postal Service Task Fraud nonsense of the early 90s. Sure we will work around the changes and restrictions, but this show has really killed what was the golden age of couponing.

The one positive to this show has been to broaden the awareness of coupons in the general public. Yes, there are some folks out there not flying under the radar and making it more difficult for the rest of us, but by and large the public perception of couponing and couponers has changed from “shesh coupons” to “how can I use coupons to stretch my hard earned dollars”. And that is good.
