CVS NOT Going 90% Off Christmas

by admin on January 11, 2011

For those of you waiting for 90% off Christmas (I STILL have 50 packs of white tissue paper and 25 rolls of ribbon from a 90% off clearance 2 years ago), CVS has done away with the 90% off practice. Items will be discarded (ie thrown away) if they are not sold at 75% off.

Bummer

Wow. I was at CVS yesterday and they actually have a LOT leftover. I can’t believe they wouldn’t sell them at an exceptional bargain to get people to come back. You never forget a 90% off clearance. Ever. ;)

That’s got to be the dumbest thing I have heard in a while. They would rather throw it away than sell it? Makes no sense.

My guess – just a guess- is that 75% off is break-even and 90% off is a loss. If they trash the remains, it is a write-off at cost. Probably not donating due to liability issues.

Those are only speculations on my part, not based on any known facts.

Now if you want to be REAL frugal, you could go dumpster diving and get it all for free! (and probably be the next person to be featured on “extreme couponing”!)

I guess the next question to ask would be….. when are they throwing them away :) Can we get locations, dates and times lol

Now it makes sense! I was at CVS on my lunch hour to get my Pepsi (they got a delivery this morning, I managed to get my 6 though they were already running low!)and I couldn’t beleive how much Christmas stuff they had left. My co-workers can’t get enough of the clearance hershy kisses, so I “splurged” fo 2 .89 cent bags. :P
At this rate that stuff will still be around at easter!

I just went to 2 different CVS’s today, and both had 90% Christmas stuff. Nothing good, but still it was 90%! I’m in Austin, TX.

YAY!

Someone (who would rather not be named) also emailed me that they asked their store manager for 90% off so they could donate it to their church and the manager agreed!

It doesn’t hurt to ask!

My CVS was not at 75% until sometime this weekend. IE they were today, but my twin who works there said they weren’t the last time she was there, which was probably Friday. Seemed late to me. They did have some cookie tins that were dirt cheap, but don’t really need any. Was thinking of getting them for church, if I needed to use RR, but the Soda deal and gasx deal took care of that for me.

I just went today to CVS and bought some Christmas gift bags. They had all the Christmas at 90% off. I live in southern Calif.

Manager of local CVS told me they weren’t allowed to go to 90% off any more and that whatever was left had to be tossed in the garbage. They could then take it out and put it on the CVS truck for CVS to donate, they could no longer do local donations. Seems rather sad all the way around.

I asked my favorite manager once why some CVS stores had items on sale and others didn’t, and why some stores (in the same area within 5-10 miles) discount holiday items on different days and maybe many days later. He said it is difficult if you don’t have enough hours available, since you have to program every single item into the system seperately and can’t just ‘blanket’ discount seasonal items. Some stores have more employees or more employee hours available (due to sales?), so they might get to the discounts earlier.

Sooooo….. throwing it away does save the labor overhead of programming yet another round of discounts. I don’t know if this is why, but that’s my SEWAG!! (Scientifically Engineered Wild Ass Guess…..new (to me) acronym I found! I have been hoping to find a way to use it! :D )

You’re welcome! It even has a ‘proper pronunciation’ …..”see-wag.” Too funny! I am glad you all like it! And it warms my cockles to know I can make Ann smile with a new one. ;)

SEWAG!! (Scientifically Engineered Wild Ass Guess

Hilarious!

And thanks for the info. It makes sense to a point. Normally by the time stuff is 90% it is a tiny end display of stuff. If there is one of each left, I can see the labor not being worthwhile, but if it is three boxes of alike items… makes me wonder.

Around here it is more than an endcap left over…probably enough to fill like 3-4 endcaps…that is still around at 75% off, and that is usually odds and ends (not really more than two or three of any like items), so it would take awhile for someone to scan it all in.
