Sunday Morning Shopping

Hubby and I were at Rite Aid promptly at 9 am. I was ready to walk if the cashier from two weeks ago was checking out. She was so clueless I’ll pass and go to another store rather than have another bad Rite Aid experience.

Instead, it was the 20-something guy whose attitude is “if it scans, great, if not, I’ll push it through”. Loooooove this guy.

Now yesterday, Yvonne mentioned that the $10 +Up rewards expired on the 17th, so I went last night and got generic-Zyrtec for the dog. That meant I did not have any +Up rewards to use today. Hubby put a slight wrench in this morning’s plans by adding to my order, so I think I left $5 on the table when I did not break this up into two orders:

(1) Dulcolax Balance $9.99
(1) Colonaide All Natural Internal Cleansing Kit $22.99 (not my idea)
(1) Motrin PM 20ct $5.39
(2) Garnier $11.32 (I have 10% off, and they were $6.29 at my store)
(1) Zegerid 14ct; $10
(1) Liquid Plumr $3.49 (hubby decided we “needed” it)
(1) Traditional Medicinals Smooth Move (16 ct) $3.69
= $66.87
- $5/$25 Rite Aid coupon
= $61.87
- $3 zegerid adperk coupon
= $58.87
- (2) $5 in-ad garnier coupons
= $48.87
- (1) $3 in-ad Mortrin coupon
= $45.97
- $3 in-ad zegerid coupon
= $42.87
- $5 dulcolax coupon (no idea where I got this from)
- (2) $1 garnier coupons
- $3 Motrin coupon
- $4 zegerid coupon
- 55¢ on pack liquid plumbr coupon
= $28.32
- $36.67 SCR
= $8.35 Profit
- $10 zegerid mail in rebate (from the Sunday inserts)
= $18.35 profit + Received (1) $7 +Up reward and (1) $3 +Up reward and (1) $2 +Up reward and (1) $1 +Up reward

Excellent trip to Rite Aid even with missing out on $5.

After that, we went to Target where I got pens, Pepperidge Farms bags (on TPC), Werther’s bagged candy for free (3oz size is $1 – $1 manufacturer coupon 5/9/10 insert= FREE), and hubby got some clearanced beans.

The pens rang up 60¢ and I got 10 packs
I handed the cashier (5) $1/2 coupons
The coupons scanned off at 60¢ each
Now, instead of making a fuss, I have so many of these BIC coupons I decided to hand over 5 more and get the pens for free rather than pay 10¢ each.
However, the last coupon scanned off at $1
So, I made a 40¢ profit on the pens, but did not use the Target $1/2 coupon.

This was at the East Amherst store for those having troubles in the past, and the clerk did not blink at 10 alike coupons.

We then went across the street to Valu to get hubby a trellis for his blackberry plants.

And that it was off to Tops where the order came to $82 AFTER coupons. Getting Max dog food is crazy expensive. A good $60 of this order was dog food (pet select) and reduced meats.

Then I dropped hubby off at Big Lots so he could get a head start on using the 20% off coupon.

In the mean time, I went to Barnes & Noble and Petco (for more dog food that Max will condescend to eat).

I dropped hubby off, went to Petco, gathered my items, checked out, when back to the car, went in to B&N, goofed around, gathered some books, checked out, went back to the card, drove back to Big Lots, and hubby was not finished.

It was an hour later.

We spent an additional 45 minutes in Big Lots. *sigh*

An hour and 45 minutes in Big Lots today means I should have major brownie points stored up. I was practically crawling the walls when we headed to the register. No one should have to endure almost two hours shopping at any store.

After loading all the cr.. er, products he spent $60 on at Big Lots AFTER 20% coupon, it was finally time to go home.

Major highs and lows today, but since I had not been shopping in so long, it was overdue.

How did you do this morning? Get any great deals? Did everything go as planned, or did you have to make changes on the fly?

Contacting Companies For Coupons For Upcoming Deals

In the interest of being proactive with Tegan’s bright idea to contact companies for coupons, I looked ahead at a few good deals that have no corresponding snail mail or printable coupons at the drug stores in a few weeks. These are items that are not store brands that you may want to contact the manufacturer to snail mail you a few coupons.

CVS beginning 7/25/10

La Roche-Posay Anthelios – La Roche-Posay Anthelios contact us page

Biore – KAO brands contact us page

Rite Aid beginning 7/25/10

All the “good stuff” has a corresponding coupon

Walgreen’s beginning 7/25/10

Lousy ad, almost nothing “good”, but there are corresponding coupons for what little there is

Sunday “Must Do” Deals

Guess where I’m going tomorrow? If you guessed Rite Aid you would be “rite”. ha ha ha (I think I’ve been living with hubby too long.) I’m not going to do all the offers, just a few things that we, or someone we know, will use.

After that it is off to… Target. Yes, they have another crappy ad, but they also have Bic pens I can get for a dime after $1/2 coupon, and I have a bazillion coupons left from last summer’s inserts (assuming I can find them), so off to Target I go.

I “think” I have a bunch of the dan-o-nino coupons, so if I want to use them I must go to Tops tomorrow and get them for free. The coupon is only valid until the 18th.

For such an awful ad, Wegmans has several freebies. If I do not to go tomorrow, I must go Monday as I have to write up organic extended sale prices. Might as well get some free stuff while I’m there.

A&P and Pathmark have a bunch of free after coupon items. Be sure to get yours before your coupons expire.

I must admit it, Walgreens has quite a few decent deals this week. However, I am still not going.

And finally, I really should head over to CVS and flip some ECB since I have Häagen-Dazs coupons. The Celsius Green Tea is also a nice flip. I think it will come down to time.

So, tomorrow looks like a busy one for me. Tops, Wegmans, CVS, Rite Aid and Target. All will be “targeted” strikes (egads I really am channeling hubby today), however, so hopefully not too long a morning.

How about you? What are your Sunday “Must Do” Deals?

It Is Not Just Me, Is It?

Things seem to be a little slow around the deal seeking world this month. I know my readership is down almost 40% from normal, so that either means the economy picked up and people are not deal hunting as much, people are on vacation, or the kids are home and more time is being spent with them (and who wants to drag three kids to the store to deal hunt anyway?)

Or Coupons, Deals and More is passé.

Nawwwww that can’t be it.

I know I have been grocery shopping for hubby and myself exactly once in the past four weeks. Except for bread, milk and yogurt, I have not really been frequenting the local grocer.

I’m still going to CVS and Rite Aid every Sunday, but I jumped off the Walgreens merry-go-round. However, that is not due to kids or the summer, that is due to Walgreens stinky Register Rewards offers.

So, how about it? Have the deals slowed down? Or is it just to warm and muggy to shop? Are you taking a break from deal hunting? Or am I wrong and folks are out beating the bushes for deals, and I am just not seeing it?

More Rite Aid Answers

Two weeks ago I had a conversation with my Rite Aid PR contact. Those Q&A are in this post. Subsequent to that, there were more questions and clarifications requested. My questions on your behalf are in red, PR’s response is in bold.

Rite Aid is sending out group email tomorrow, but I was assured our questions were responded to first today.

You and I discussed that the managers have the option to substitute a product and lower the price by the amount of the +Up reward for the original product, or give a gift card on the raincheck in lieu of the +Up reward that cannot be forced, but can they do anything else? Such as lowering the price on the raincheck to correspond to the +Up reward?

Yes, they can do this specifically. But this type of transaction – like any nonstandard transaction – is at the discretion of our store team. Should they be unable to resolve your issue, please contact our customer service department by calling 1-800-RITEAID (1-800-748-3243) or by visiting this Web address: Rite Aid Customer Service

Is there a quantity limit on the rainchecks?

Not sure I understand. +UP offers are typically limited to a certain amount per wellness+ household as indicated in the circular.

And, have the stores been informed of their choices?

Our stores have been instructed on what to do if a +UP deal does not go through as it was advertised. But you may still have to request the deal if it does not come through automatically before leaving the store. This is also true when redeeming +UP rewards as once the reward is scanned, it is invalidated and cannot be used again, even if the credit does not come through correctly. We apologize for any inconvenience on either matter and are working on additional register fixes to simplify this process.

You and I also spoke about there being no redemption limits ie, If someone has (5) +Up rewards totally $10 and an $11 order, they may redeem all their +Up rewards, but do the stores understand this?

They should, but I have heard reports of cases where the reward was misinterpreted as a valid discount only on a specific product. If this happens, please ask the store team for clarification or contact our customer service department.

I’ve received several complaints that managers will not accept more than one +UP reward.

Me, too, and I’m sorry for that. We’ve got fix coming that will hopefully resolve some of this confusion within a month.

I also received two complaints that the clerk wanted the customer to redeem the +UP for the product that generated the reward only, but I think those may have been exceptions and many (most) clerks understand that the +Up rewards are good on ANY product (exceptions according to law).

Glad to hear they’re the exception. Please let me or customer service know in any cases of this that cannot be resolved in the store.

I also had questions as to whether or not these could be redeemed for prescriptions. I am in NYS so my answer is “no”, but what about the rest of the country?

+UP rewards are never legally allowed to apply toward a price reduction on prescriptions. I think what you’re referring to in NYS is that state law there prohibits us from granting wellness+ points for every prescription filled.

And finally, I had questions as to when a policy on the +Up rewards would be made up so that all the stores will be on the same page with purchase and redemption requirements.

I’m working on a FAQ that will hopefully be shared in August. Again, I apologize for any bumps in the road as this program is perfected.

And I had snuck another question in on a different email:

More questions have cropped up regarding how many alike rewards will work on an order. Some folks have been saying more than one alike +UP reward on an order will not work, and there is no way for the manager to over-ride that. True?

Yes, unfortunately the +UP reward system is automated. Rite Aid associates do have the ability to offer recourse when appropriate through other means including issuing a gift card, lowering the receipt total and even substituting a similar product.

Be On The Look-out For A Dickinson’s Witch Hazel Rebate

Kari sent an email stating she found her Dickinson’s Witch Hazel Try Me Free Rebate hanging on on a bottle in Rite Aid! Nice filler if you can find the form as a form IS required.

Thanks Kari!
