Many years ago during the mid 70s, I recall watching The Phil Donahue Show. He had Susan Samtur on as a guest. She was explaining to gold ole Phil how to get free trial size products after coupons. Phil kept questioning why anyone would want to have all those tiny tubes around the house. Susan was looking at him like he had two heads and finally blurted out, “But it’s FREE!

Now we all know that even after coupon a “free” trial size (or full size) product may not actually be completely free if sales tax is involved. State sales tax laws will make all the difference as to whether or not those trial sizes are actually worthwhile to “buy”.

I am going to use as an example an 89¢ 1oz trial size toothpaste, and a $1 OAS manufacturer coupon, and an 8% sales tax rate:

• No sales tax? Worthwhile!

• Sales tax deducted from the coupon portion of a product? Worthwhile! as it will end up completely free!

• Store overage? Worthwhile! The sales tax in this example would be 7¢, so $1 coupon – 89¢ toothpaste = 11¢ overage which will cover the 7¢ sales tax.

• Sales tax on the full product amount? It depends.

In the example I laid out:

89¢ toothpaste
- $1 coupon, adjusted down to 89¢
= 7¢ sales tax

Now let’s say you also have a 75¢ toothpaste coupon that can be doubled in addition to the $1 toothpaste coupon. The 4oz size toothpaste is on sale at your local grocery store, which does double, for $1.50.

$1.50
- 75¢ coupon doubled
= 12¢ sales tax

This is a case where the 4oz size is a better deal. Why? Well 4 ounces of the trial size is 7¢ per ounce in tax = 28¢ total. The 12¢ for the 4 ounce size is less expensive making it a better deal. And, if your state (like mine does) considers the doubled part of a coupon to be a store-coupon, you will not pay tax on the 75¢ doubled portion of the coupon, making the 4oz tube 6¢ (all sales tax) in my state.

My point? While free is almost always better than paying for something, do watch the sales tax costs which can really drive up the cost-per-ounce on those trial size freebies.
