Do you prefer that a company offers a free sample of a product, or a decent coupon coupon? And if you prefer the coupon, what do you consider decent?
I would rather personally rather receive a coupon than a free sample. Most of the sample sizes are so small, they are useless. Remember the old perfume vials where you could actually use and wear the perfume once or twice to test in on your skin!? Now they are these little patches that barely smell when you receive them. In light of the way perfume samples can stink up a magazine, you really have to wonder about that.
When I receive a small shampoo or conditioner sample, I always wonder how I am supposed to judge with that tiny bottle – or worse, a packet!? Most of the conditioner samples do not contain enough product to fully smooth my medium length hair. How can people with long hair possible judge?
On the other hand, without a decent sale I would never use a $1 coupon to try a $6 product. Even a 75¢ coupon on a $3 product is iffy for me (and I have doubles to 99¢).
The best of all worlds is a watermarked free coupon that I have no problems redeeming at the store. While it costs a company more to give away free full-sized products, I do wonder how much more exactly? Those tiny packages that come in the mail as free samples sometimes have very creative packaging – that has to cost – not to mention the cost of postage.
So what do you feel is a more effective marketing ploy? A free sample, or a coupon? And had a free sample ever made a “loyal” user out of you? What about a free coupon?
